This is an amazing activity to build and strengthen your classroom community! Students are prompted to think about their identity and that of others in the class. It encourages engagement, critical thinking and teamwork. Best of all - it's fun! It can be used for a variety of ages (with some tiering).
 
The teacher asks are you a _____ or a _____ and then the students have to choose the thing with which they most identify … not simply which they like more. They then collaborate with the other students who have chosen the same thing to come up with a reason WHY.  This helps with communication skills - students have to be able to verbalize their thoughts and feelings in a safe and supported way. Perfect for the beginning of the school year!
